If you have dry mouth, you will know it. Signs of dry mouth include an uncomfortable burning sensation in your mouth, having cracked lips and being prone to cavities. But there are some things you can do to prevent dry mouth.

-Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Dry mouth can have more complex causes, but sometimes it is just a matter of dehydration. Water can help your body function the way it is supposed to, and that includes creating sufficient saliva levels for a healthy oral environment.

-Chewing sugar-free gum can also help. Avoid sugary gum because it can stick to your teeth and draw in microorganisms that produce acids which can cause cavities. When you chew gum you are actually stimulating saliva production as the chewing action signals the mouth to produce more saliva to help digest and clean up the food.

-Fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash can also help you avoid cavity formation. While these items cannot really help you rehydrate your mouth, they can certainly protect your teeth against cavities while you try to solve the problem. Fluoride is a natural mineral, and it helps the teeth draw in calcium and phosphorus when it is absorbed into the enamel, so it can fortify teeth against decay.
