Question: How are wisdom teeth removed?

A local and general anesthetic are used to make the process of wisdom teeth removal more pleasant and comfortable for the patient. Usually there is no pain during the process. First the gum tissue is incised to expose the tooth and then the tooth is extracted. The extraction site may then be closed with stitches that dissolve within a few days.

Question: At what age should wisdom teeth be removed?

Each patient is different. Generally by the mid teen years, doctors can determine the need for wisdom tooth removal. The earlier the need is determined the better. I prefer the mid to late teens. BUT AGAIN, EACH PATIENT IS DIFFERENT. Young patients heal faster and result in less long term post-operative complications.

Question: How do I know if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Regular dental checkups are the best way to know if your wisdom teeth should be removed. Other clues to help you recognize a wisdom tooth problem are pain in the back molar area of the mouth, partially visible wisdom teeth and crowded, overlapping teeth. If you have noticed any of these problems it may be time to have your wisdom teeth removed.

Question: Must wisdom teeth always be removed?

Frequently, the wisdom teeth are trapped below the gums causing pain and other dental problems. When the tooth only partially extends through the gums, a space is created where bacteria can grow causing infection and tooth decay. If the tooth will not erupt normally or it is trapped below the surface, it should be removed to avoid more severe problems in the future.
